Lovely article, thank you. I teach architecture and our third year studio this year is based around the idea of ‘Genius Loci’. We often look at how colour palettes can be generated from the place where we are working but I wasn’t aware of this Japanese practice before. It also reminds me of Bernat Klein’s textiles inspired by his home in the Scottish Borders.

Japan House puts on some brilliant exhibitions. I’m sad I missed this, but went along to one about traditional timber joinery earlier this year which was fantastic.

Thank you! I'm all about 'Genius loci', especially when I make my own colours. Sounds like a great studio!

I just missed the joinery exhibit because I was so busy moving, but otherwise I'm a regular, such a lovely place.

I love all of this. The plants, the colours, the sensitivity of the Japanese culture to all the nuanced layers of beauty. The idea of living colours really sings to me, and is something I've been playing with recently as I make my own natural inks and art. Thank you.

Same here, I've been really inspired by it!

I've been drawn to kinu since reading Liza Dalby's delightful novel The Tale of Murasaki. So I knew it was generally based on seasons, but never took the opportunity to go deeper. I'm thrilled not only to have better understanding but also to see the photos -- and read your description -- of this sublime exhibit. More, more! (I have Shimura Fukumi's book on my wishlist now.)
